Ordering repeat prescriptions

The easiest ways to order repeat prescriptions are:

These accounts show you all your repeat medicine and dosage and you can choose the ones you need.

You can also:

  • bring the paper form to the surgery, Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 6.30pm
  • Post the repeat prescription slip, or simply drop it into Abbey Surgery when we are open.

We no longer accept repeat prescriptions via email. Please order by either of the systems above.

A standard prescription is shown below, on which the important information is listed in the blue box to the right.

When you collect your medication from the Pharmacy or Dispensary, the left (green) half of the form is retained by the Pharmacist and you will be given the repeat prescription slip (right hand side).

Collecting your prescription

You can usually collect your prescription from the pharmacy 3 to 5 working days after you have ordered it.

You will need to choose a pharmacy to collect your prescription from. We call this nominating a pharmacy.

You can change your nominated pharmacy at any time, please make sure you tell us the postcode and address of your chosen pharmacy:

  • on the app or website where you order repeat prescriptions
  • Pop into the surgery ad speak to reception

Questions about your prescription

If you have questions about your medicine, your local pharmacists can answer these. They can also answer questions on medicines you can buy without a prescription.

The NHS website has information on how your medicine works, how and when to take it, possible side effects and answers to your common questions.

If you would like to speak to someone at the GP surgery about your prescription:

  • Only telephone us if you have no access to a computer as the above is more secure and quicker. If you telephone us, please between 2pm and 4pm only.
  • or send us a medication query via the admin option.

Medication reviews

If you have a repeat prescription, we may ask you to come in for a regular review. We will be in touch when you need to come in for a review.

Prescription charges

The cost of a prescription is £9.90. You may be exempt, depending on your circumstances. You can buy a pre-payment certificate. A PPC costs £32.05 for 3 months or £108.10 for 12 months.. For more information call 0300 330 1341 or apply on-line.

What to do with old medicines

Take it to the pharmacy you got it and they will be able to dispose of it for you. Do not put it in your household bin or flush it down the toilet.

Healthcare waste

We are unable to dispose of any healthcare waste on your behalf – including SHARPS please contact West Devon Council HERE to arrange a collection.

About pharmacists

As qualified healthcare professionals, pharmacists can offer advice on minor illnesses such as:

  • coughs
  • colds
  • sore throats
  • tummy trouble
  • aches and pains

They can also advise on medicine that you can buy without a prescription.

Many pharmacies are open until late and at weekends. You do not need an appointment.

Most pharmacies have a private consultation room where you can discuss issues with pharmacy staff without being overheard.
